Building partnerships for prevention
Everyone should be safe in custody
This is the goal we share with our partners in Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand.
Between 2021 and 2024, we worked with authorities, national human rights institutions, civil society and government on national and regional initiatives to promote safeguards in the first hours of police custody.
We are sharing what we learned to support torture prevention efforts in other regions so people, everywhere, are safe in custody.

#SafeInCustody Manifesto
The #SafeInCustody Manifesto is a public commitment in support of torture prevention. It sets out four key principles and actions to reduce the risk of torture and ill-treatment in police custody.

Sharing good practices
Through the #SafeInCustody project, we documented three good practices that helped inspire change in attitudes, practices, capacity and relationships.

Engage
With our #SafeInCustody partners, we developed new approaches to build momentum for torture prevention in Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand: an online game, cartoon and poster competitions, raising youth voices and more.
