Promoting the voice of young people
Six university students representing Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand competed at the #SafeInCustody regional speech competition, held in Kuala Lumpur in January 2024.
Winners of national competitions, they presented an inspiring vision for fair and just communities.
#SafeInCustody Festival
Hosted by SUARAM, this two-day festival was a celebration of hope and a call to action for a world without torture. Held in Kuala Lumpur in August 2023, the festival used music, art, dialogue and performance to bring people together and promote respect for the human rights of all detained persons.
Engaging young people in dialogue
In 2023, Cross Cultural Foundation and the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand organised seven #SafeinCustody Schools around Thailand. More than 200 young people took part in a dialogue about their rights in custody and how they can help build a torture-free society.
Drawing a better tomorrow
In 2022, young people aged 15-25 across Malaysia took part in a cartooning competition organised by SUARAM. The competition and exhibition showcased the hopes of young people for safe policing and fair justice systems.
Torture prevention documentaries
In 2022, SUARAM produced three short documentaries exploring experiences and effects of torture and ill-treatment, as well as opportunities to shift policing culture to more fully uphold human rights.
Art for justice
In 2023, Task Force Detainees of the Philippines and the Commission on Human Rights invited young people to create a poster in support of the #SafeInCustody vision of justice and human rights, with a focus on people deprived of liberty. The results were stunning.
