We seek to build new partnerships, mobilise our supporters and promote new voices to advocate for the absolute prohibition of torture. Hope is central to how we communicate for change.

We inspire others by involving artists and youth, and by sharing the stories of changemakers, including detention monitors, family members and others working to improve the treatment and conditions of those detained.

WHAT DOES TORTURE PREVENTION LOOK LIKE?

New forms of communication on the need to prohibit torture, such as storytelling and data visualisation, help build community awareness and support.

Research and information on practices amounting to torture, and on the links between torture and issues such as corruption and sustainable development, drives new strategies and new coalitions to prevent torture.

Demonstrating how torture prevention works strengthens advocacy for prevention policies and measures.

Working with new partners – in the media, the justice sector, academia, training institutions and cultural leaders – multiplies the number of voices in support of torture prevention.

HOW DOES THE APT CONTRIBUTE?

We work with #SafeInCustody partners in Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines to engage youth and the broader community through creative actions and hope-based communication.

With the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), we convene an association of Artists against Torture, where renowned contemporary artists donate a work that conveys a powerful message against torture.

We advocate for torture prevention to be integrated into public policies and strategic plans, for example with the Southeast Asia National Human Rights Institution Forum

Through blogs, videos and podcasts, we feature new voices and perspectives on the human dimensions of torture prevention, from detention monitors, family members, defence attorneys, academics and others.

We present photography exhibitions, online and with national partners, to connect with the public and present torture prevention through a new lens.
