On 5 November 2020, PDHJ and MoJ kicked off the Focus Group Discussion in Dili, Timor Leste.
The FGD will also take place in Gleno on 6 November and in Suai on 10 November. The FGD is aimed at gathering prison guards' experiences and insight on their needs, issues/challenges, roles and responsibilities working in the prison system. The information gathers will serve as the basis for, and inform the content of, torture prevention modules that the APT, PDHJ and MoJ are currently developing.
The FGD participated by the Deputy Provedora for Human Rights of the PDHJ, the Vice Minister of MoJ, Focal point for this project from both PDHJ and MoJ, Director of Prison Guards and 20 prison guards composed of one female and 19 males. This activity is part of the two-year cooperation that the APT, PDHJ and MOJ have, under a Memorandum of Understanding that was signed recently.
Other activities conducted includes building awareness among stakeholders in Timor-Leste on the importance of preventing torture in detention places as well as developing a database that systematise official resources in the country such as laws, action plans and national reports that are relevant to torture prevention.
