In our ongoing mission to prevent torture and promote human rights globally, we're excited to share some remarkable updates from the Torture Prevention (Learning) Platform. As an organisation dedicated to this vital cause, the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) continues to innovate and expand our reach through online tools and e-learning initiatives.

Torture prevention is a specialized field that demands unique skills and knowledge, often outside the scope of traditional training. Recognizing this gap, the APT developed the Torture Prevention Village (TPV) to equip our partners and stakeholders with the expertise needed to effectively address torture's root causes and enhance their capacity to act.

Recent Updates
At the APT, we value feedback and continuously strive to enhance the user experience on our platform. Following a comprehensive evaluation in January 2024, we've implemented several updates to serve our community's needs better.

1. Community growth and engagement

We are thrilled to announce the remarkable growth of our community on the TPV platform. Since its inception in 2021, our community has flourished, with over 1600 members from 106 countries around the world! This expansion signifies increased engagement with our courses and fosters a rich exchange of experiences and insights via our discussion forum – the Virtual café- enriching our collective knowledge base. You can participate in discussions here!

2. Enhanced Learning Opportunities
We've introduced new open and in-depth courses, covering topics such as Introduction to the OPCAT, the Role of NHRIs in Torture Prevention and issues related to detention monitoring, including integrating a gender-sensitive lens . These interactive courses, available in multiple languages, provide valuable insights and practical knowledge to participants.

a. Introductory courses open to all registered users: Introduction to the OPCAT (2023) and How NHRIs can prevent torture and ill-treatment (2024) both available in English, French, and Spanish).

b.    In-depth courses(IDC): Tailored to the needs of specific institutions, these courses provide advanced knowledge on detention monitoring issues related to gender sensitivity, reporting and recommendations, the role of NHRIs in torture prevention, Use of Registers, and Monitoring police custody. Six countries participated in the IDCs (Brazil, Cabo Verde, Madagascar, Maldives, Morocco, and the Philippines) with participants from the judiciary, police, NHRIs, and NPMs.

3. Institutional Empowerment

Thanks to one of the new features on the Campus institutions now have greater control over their learning experience through independent platform administration. This feature allows organisations to customize courses, track progress, and integrate TPV training into their onboarding processes.

4. Virtual café for blended learning and community building

Our Virtual Café serves as a vibrant hub for knowledge exchange and networking. Participants can engage in discussions, share experiences, and connect with peers and experts globally, fostering a supportive and collaborative learning environment. It now includes various topics linked to all our courses where participants from different regions have real-time knowledge exchanges with peers and experts on the issues related to any course you take. Try it now!

Looking Ahead: What’s in store for 2024

As we glide through this year, we're excited to unveil several exciting initiatives:

  •  The Immersive Experience Launch: Get ready for an immersive learning experience set to launch this April! Stay tuned for updates on this groundbreaking feature.

  • User Experience Enhancements: We're committed to improving the TPV platform's user interface and navigation, making it even easier for participants to access and engage with our resources. It will also include an auto-guide to support easy navigation for users.

  •  Notifications and Interactive Features: From March onwards, participants will receive notifications on comments or replies in discussion topics of courses they have enrolled in and have the ability to express their thoughts using emojis, fostering meaningful discussions and interaction.

  • Advanced courses: Building on feedback from our community, we'll be introducing a new set of advanced courses, providing deeper insights into detention monitoring and torture prevention strategies.

As we forge ahead in our mission of mobilizing against torture through prevention, among others, we thank you for being part of and contributing to our learning community because, without you, there will be no community!

Remember, together we can prevent torture!
