Date: 12-13 July 2007

Place: Vienna, Austria

Purpose: To participate in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s (OSCE) Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting 'Promotion and Protection of Human Rights: Responsibilities and Effective Remedies'.

Activities: The APT travelled to Vienna, Austria, on 12-13 July 2007 for a meeting organized by the Spanish Chairmanship of the OSCE and the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). The meeting looked at the role played by national courts, civil society and national human rights institutions in dealing with violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms. The APT regularly participates in the OSCE’s annual as well as periodic meetings on a range of human rights issues and on occasion has co-organized side-events at such meetings. Outcome: The event broached a wide range of issues and various recommendations and proposals were made, especially to enhance the protection of human rights defenders. One such proposal included the establishment of some form of mechanism or unit within the OSCE’s wider structure, possibly the Chairman-in-Office, which would swiftly respond to the plight of human rights defenders in trouble. The recommendations of the meeting will be made available on the ODIHR website.

Partners: More information about the event can be found on the conference website.
