The APT, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has launched a new online tool to support governments in Latin American and the Caribbean as they respond to the challenges posed by COVID-19.
COVID-19 Digital Mapping: Justice and Deprivation of Liberty compiles measures taken by governments in the region to respond to the impacts of the pandemic in their criminal justice systems and in places of detentions.
It includes more that 1,000 entries related to legislative, administrative and judicial measures taken since the start of the outbreak in March 2020. More will be added on an ongoing basis.
The Digital Mapping tool is a platform developed to promote transparency of information and exchange of good practices to promote the health, safety and well-being of people deprived of liberty across Latin America and the Caribbean.
What kind of information is available?
- Decrees issued by governments in the context of the pandemic
- Protocols developed to provide care for the prison population
- Statistical information on COVID-19 infections in prisons
- Action plans in justice systems to respond to the crisis by COVID-19
- News releases and other relevant information.
The Digital Mapping tool also allows information to be cross-referenced by groups in situations of vulnerability - in particular, women - as well as by Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on health and well-being; gender equality; peace, justice and strong institutions; and partnerships to achieve the SDGs.
