Nouakchott, Mauritania – From January 28 to 31 2025 the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) conducted training for new members of Mauritania’s National Preventive Mechanism (NPM), reinforcing efforts to combat torture. Held in Nouakchott, the event brought together key stakeholders, including MNP representatives from Senegal and Tunisia, international experts, and Mauritanian authorities, underscoring regional collaboration.

The APT representative praised progress made since the NPM’s establishment, stating, “This training enhances knowledge, fosters best practices, and prepares members for future challenges.” Dr. Abdel Malick, NPM President, reaffirmed the mechanism’s commitment, emphasizing its role in raising awareness and engaging with state institutions. He stated, “This training equips our members with essential tools to carry out our mandate effectively. Strengthening our capacities ensures that we can better prevent torture.”

While there are opportunities to enhance resources and expand access to detention facilities, the APT encouraged continued innovation and collaboration. “Each challenge is an opportunity to improve our strategies. The APT supports the NPM in its mission,” said the representative.

The Mauritanian government’s support for the NPM was highlighted as a regional model, demonstrating its commitment to strengthening torture prevention. Participants expressed optimism for the future, with Dr. Malick emphasizing the need for continued capacity-building to enhance the NPM’s effectiveness. "This training is an important step, but sustained efforts are needed to further develop our expertise and resources," he stated. "We are grateful for the ongoing support from APT and our partners, which reinforces our ability to fulfill our mandate and protect human dignity."

The APT reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the global movement for torture prevention.
