Detention monitors and advocates across the globe can now access free online courses and resources to deepen their knowledge of torture prevention, through the APT’s Torture Prevention Learning Village.
Launched today, the Torture Prevention Learning Village is a one-stop-shop for anyone who wants to learn more about practical approaches to prevent torture and uphold dignity in places of detention.
The Learning Village includes:
- A Campus, which currently features courses on the fundamentals of detention monitoring and on gender-sensitive detention monitoring, with more being developed
- A Library, which features all APT publications, resources and videos, including our Detention Database and NPM toolkit
- A Café, where practitioners across the globe will be able connect with one another (coming soon)
- An Immersive experience that will explore torture prevention from a new and practical perspective (coming soon).
As well as being open to the public, the APT will use the platform to deliver short courses for our partners. We will also develop tailor-made courses that respond to emerging issues.
There is a lot of diversity in the pedagogical modalities used. The content is beautifully illustrated. I will share with my team as a best practice example.

“We have been working for more than a year to devise the best way to share our expertise and deliver high-quality capacity building programmes online,” said Audrey Olivier Muralt, APT Deputy Secretary General.
“More features are being developed and the content will soon be available in French, Spanish and Portuguese,” she said.
The Learning Village was conceived and developed by the APT, from the illustrations to the course materials. We received creative and development support from the digital agency, Ars Futura.
“We want to make sure it is the very best resource of its kind and so we look forward to receiving feedback from as many people as possible,” Ms Olivier Muralt said.
The APT is grateful for the financial support of our donors to develop the Campus.
