Renowned Chilean artist, architect and photographer, Alfredo Jaar, will help relaunch an international association of Artists against Torture when he presents an exclusive creation at the ArtGenève exhibition, to be held from 3-6 March 2022.
Winner of the Hasselblad Award, Jaar’s work is centred on a single, powerful message: torture must end now. It will also help raise funds for new art or performances to be launched later this year in Geneva.
Jaar will head the Artists against Torture initiative in 2022, with another leading artist set to take on this role in 2023.
“Art speaks to our heart and helps us see the world from a new perspective. Through their work, artists can connect with the community and share an unequivocal message against torture,” said APT Secretary General Barbara Bernath.
“In addition, art can help us reach out to new groups of people, including collectors and other art lovers, to support our fundraising efforts.”
These are the twin goals of Artists against Torture, which was relaunched last year to support the work of the APT in preventing torture and the work of the ICRC in protecting prisoners.
The APT was previously supported by an association of 19 Artists against Torture, founded in 1993, who developed an extensive portfolio of contemporary artworks.
