Resilience, partnerships and innovation were at the heart of our work in 2021.

We developed new partnerships, deepened existing ones, invested in digitalisation, and began leading a new agenda for torture prevention with the launch of the Méndez Principles.

Our 2021 Annual Report provides a snapshot of what we achieved in the four areas where we are driving change:

  • People are treated with dignity and fairness by the criminal justice system
  • Persons in situations of vulnerability are safe from torture and ill-treatment
  • Effective and independent oversight protects persons deprived of liberty
  • Strong arguments and new voices are mobilised to prevent torture.

“2021 was another challenging year, with the pandemic creating uncertainty and vulnerability for people across the globe, especially for those deprived of liberty,” said APT Secretary General Barbara Bernath.

“Despite the many restrictions, we were able to make important progress thanks to the outstanding efforts of our team, partners and supporters,” she said.

“Collaboration is essential for driving lasting change on complex issues,” added APT Deputy Secretary General Audrey Olivier Muralt.

“This Annual Report demonstrates that, when we work together, we really can prevent torture – and this is what continues to inspire our work.”

Our 2021 Annual Report is available in two formats: aPDF version and an online version, which features additional resources and video material.
