The Mapping Solitary Confinement project, launched today, aims to find out more about the use – or non-use -of solitary confinement internationally. The project is a collaborative effort to paint a picture of how and when solitary confinement (defined as 22+ hours a day in a locked cell) is used in places of detention across the world. It builds on the knowledge of in-country experts from across the globe who volunteered their time and substantial expertise to help illuminate the darkest corner of the prison system in their country.
