Lithuania adopted the law on OPCAT ratification at domestic level in December 2013 and designated its Parliamentary Ombudsperson's Office as NPM, through amendments to its Law, providing for additional functions of the Parliamentary Ombudsman that are necessary to become a national human rights institution as well as national preventive mechanism.
In January 2014, Lithuania deposited the instrument of ratification of the OPCAT with the United Nations in New York, becoming the 70th OPCAT State party. In January 2014, the amendments to the Law of the Parliamentary Ombudsman also entered into force.
