While sometimes necessary for security reasons and to prevent the entry of illegal goods into places of deprivation of liberty, body searches can be extremely traumatic for women detainees. Accordingly, the use of body searches needs to be clearly regulated and associated with safeguards and intrusive searches resorted only if absolutely necessary.
