Training workshop on institutional development and detention monitoring in Panama
From 17 to 21 June 2019, the APT will be in Panama to conduct a 3-day training workshop on institutional development and the monitoring of places of detention for the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) of Panama, a new National Direction established within the Ombuds Institution.
The main objectives of the workshop are:
- To strengthen the knowledge and understanding of the NPM and the Ombuds Institution on the prevention of torture, the OPCAT system and the NPM’s preventive role as an agent of change.
- To contribute to define a common vision and understanding of the NPM’s mandate.
- To provide the NPM with the strategic and methodological advice to monitor places of deprivation of liberty.
- To accompany the NPM in the definition of its strategic priorities and internal procedures.
The mission will also provide the opportunity for the APT to meet with the newly appointed members of the NPMs’ Advisory Council, as well as with the relevant authorities and the UNDP Office in Panama.
The mission is carried out as part of a project developed and funded by the UNDP Office in Panama, implemented by the APT in partnership with the NPM.
