Strategies to prevent torture against LGBTI persons: national encounter in Brasil

August 20 - 23, 2019

LGBTI persons are particularly exposed to institutional violence in detention settings. The APT is convening a meeting of torture prevention experts  as well as civil society organisations, to discuss strategies to tackle this issue.

The meeting will gather representatives from the National Preventive Mechanism against torture (NPM), local entities (LPM) of the National System (from Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Paraíba and Rondônia), as well as local and national NGOs, specialised on LGBTI issues. The seminar will include visits to detention facilities as well as meetings with authorities.

A second seminar will take place immediately after with NPMs' and LPMs' members to explore how to strengthen torture prevention in Brazil, in a context of harsh attacks against anti-torture bodies in the country.

Both seminars will take place in Recife, Pernambuco.
