Draft resolution against cruelty of female genital mutilation

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

For the first time the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly urges States to end the practice of female circumcision and other genital mutilation procedures, calling on all Member States to prohibit the practice and end impunity for those who carry out such violations.

Female genital mutilation is an irreparable irreversible abuse of the human rights of women and girls, as well as a threat to their health. According to the Special Rapporteur on violence against women and the Special Rapporteur on torture, the procedure may also amount to torture.
