APT Participated in 26 of June Activities in Guatemala

Monday, June 28, 2010

The Director of the APT Office for Latin America participated in commemorative activities for the 26 of June, International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, in Guatemala.

A public forum was organized by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to promote the adoption of draft legislation creating a national preventive mechanism under the OPCAT.

Additionally, a hearing with the legislative committee currently reviewing the draft NPM law – the Temporary Committee for Reform of the Justice Sector, was held, as well as a round table at the University Rafael Landivar.  Guatemala ratified the OPCAT in 2008.  A network of relevant national actors has drafted the legislative proposal which foresees the creation of National Commission to Prevent Torture as NPM.
